Course description

The EASA Flight Instructor course at OSM Aviation Academy includes leadership training, communication techniques, and teaching skills.

The duration of this program is from 3 to 6 months.

Academic studies

During the theoretical parts of the flight instructor course, you will develop a deeper understanding of air law, meteorology, navigation, principles of flight, and night flying. In addition to solidifying your theoretical knowledge, you will practice your instructional skills and perform briefings in preparation for the practical flight training.

During the briefings, you and your classmates will brief each other under the supervision of an experienced EASA FI-I and you will discuss techniques, pertinent knowledge, and the skills that are essential to facilitate the learning process for your students.

The theoretical part also includes a course in Crew Resource Management and pedagogical skills. First Aid and firefighting is also part of the course, with instructors from the Fire Department in Västerås.

Flight training

During the practical parts of the flight instructor course, you will improve your flying skills from the right seat as well as your ability to instruct and fly simultaneously. Your Instructor will act as your student and perform common errors for you to detect, correct, and give suggestions on how to improve.

The flight lessons in this course consist of 30 hours, of which 25 hours is dual with an EASA FI-I and 5 hours is together with one of your classmates.

Admissions process

STEP 1

All eligible applicants are given computer-based tests that they can complete from their own computer (internet access required).

STEP 2

The next step in the process consists of an interview, written test, and theoretical test lesson. This step is also being carried out at OSMAA in Västerås. The interview and theoretical test lessons are held by personnel from OSMAA. The written test is to ensure that the candidate has a good level of knowledge to act as an instructor.

STEP 3

The last part of the process is a practical test. For the practical admission flight, you will be assigned a flight lesson in advance to learn.

The test consists of three parts:

  • Part 1 is the Briefing before the flight where the candidate together with an instructor that acts as a student goes thru the exercise.
  • Part 2 is the Practical flight where you demonstrate and instruct the student at the same time as you fly.
  • Part 3 is debriefing where you go through the lesson and talks about the students’ performance.

NOTE! Step 1 is a requirement from the school while step 2 and 3 is mandatory according to regulations. If you have passed any of the above-mentioned stages with us recently you will not have to redo the steps you have already passed.

The whole process will be done as concentrated as possible for the candidates to minimize the travel and time spent in Västerås before the start of the course.

NOTE! If an insufficient number of applicants are unable to pass through selection, OSM Aviation Academy reserves the right to reschedule or cancel this course.
