Find yourself working directly with airline customers to understand their requirements and enable data science based outcomes to inform improvements to their operations. The Data Engineer will develop data decoder configurations, based on technical documentation. Develop logical data mappings to standardize analytic inputs, and develop and manage data flows for flight data files.

Job Description

In this role, you will:

• Work closely with commercial airline customers to decode, cleanse, and process time-series flight data through GE’s flight data feature extraction and analytics platform (Event Management System)
• Interpret technical flight data recorder documentation to decode binary flight data into engineering units
• Develop data mapping specifications based on the results of data analysis and functional requirements to aide in standardizing the data for analytic use
• Validate data decoding and mapping results with expected results
• Implement and develop data quality rules and tests
• Build automated tools to support the processing and ingestion of flight data files into GE’s flight data platform
• Provide advanced technical support for existing customers’ data flows and data configurations
• Become proficient at working with time-series flight data – developing subject matter expertise for aircraft sensors, flight data recorders, and the use of flight data for analytic use

Minimum requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
• A minimum of 1 year hands-on experience with scripting and programming languages
• A minimum of 1 year hands-on experience working with data to achieve analytical results

Desired Characteristics:

• Ability to understand logical and physical data models, big data storage architecture, data modeling methodologies, metadata management, master data management & data lineage techniques
• Hands-on experience in scripting languages like Powershell, Python, or Matlab
• General understanding of flight dynamics and aircraft systems
• Exposure to unstructured datasets and ability to handle XML, Parquet, and JSON file formats
• Familiarity with Microsoft Azure
• Experience creating text parsers using regular expressions
• Ability to learn and utilize new technical software tools and ability to grasp new concepts quickly
• Experience working in the aviation industry
• Familiarity with the binary numeral system and converting binary data to decimal data
• Effective problem solving skills – able to independently and thoroughly investigate problems and identify solutions
• Detail oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and thoroughness
• Exposure to handling machine or sensor datasets from industrial businesses
• Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate advanced technical topics in a clear and concise manner
